Security monitoring

Photo capture on failed unlock

What it does: Silently takes a webcam photo every time someone enters the wrong PIN.

User benefit: Visual proof of who was at your keyboard, not just a log entry.

How it works: The capture is instant and completely invisible to the person at the lock screen.

Good to know: No camera indicator or flash is shown. The capture is discreet.

Limitations: If the webcam encounters a serious error, capture may pause until the next session.

Email security alerts

What it does: Sends you an email with the photo, your PC's IP address, approximate location, and device info.

User benefit: Know who touched your device and from where, even when you're not nearby.

Good to know: Use the "Send test email" button in settings to verify your email setup.

Limitations: You need to provide your own email server credentials (SMTP).

Shortcut bypass protection

What it does: Prevents the lock screen from being closed with ALT+F4 or similar keyboard shortcuts.

User benefit: The lock screen stays up. Common workarounds don't work.

Limitations: Protects against standard keyboard shortcuts, not system-level tools like Task Manager.

Multi-monitor coverage

What it does: Covers all connected monitors when the screen is locked.

User benefit: No second-screen loophole. Your entire desktop is protected.

Good to know: Additional screens show a black overlay while the primary screen has the PIN entry.

Unlock & access

Windows Hello unlock

What it does: Unlock with your fingerprint, face, or iris using Windows Hello.

User benefit: Fast, convenient access for you, while the security monitoring stays active.

Limitations: Windows Hello must be set up in Windows Settings before Kynos can use it.

PIN unlock

What it does: Unlock Kynos with a numeric PIN of at least four digits.

User benefit: A reliable way to unlock even on devices without biometric hardware.

How it works: Your PIN is securely encrypted and stored on your PC.

Limitations: There is no PIN recovery option yet. Keep your PIN safe.

On-screen PIN pad

What it does: Shows a full-screen numeric keypad as an alternative way to enter your PIN.

User benefit: Handy for touchscreen devices or when typing on a keyboard is awkward.

Configuration: Enabled by default; can be turned off in General settings.

Control & reliability

Keyboard shortcut lock

What it does: Lock your screen instantly with a customizable keyboard shortcut.

User benefit: One key press and your screen is locked. No mouse needed.

Configuration: Alt+L by default. You can also enable the Pause key as an extra trigger.

Limitations: Other apps using the same shortcut may conflict.

Automation lock trigger

What it does: Lets scripts and other applications trigger a Kynos lock automatically.

User benefit: Integrate Kynos into your workflows, for example to lock on schedule or when a certain app closes.

Limitations: Any application on your PC can trigger the lock through this interface.

System tray integration

What it does: Runs quietly in the system tray, with no main window cluttering your taskbar.

User benefit: Kynos stays out of the way until you need it.

Start with Windows

What it does: Optionally launches automatically when you sign in to Windows.

User benefit: Protection starts the moment you log in, without having to remember to open the app.

Configuration: Toggle on or off in settings.

Single instance protection

What it does: Ensures only one copy of Kynos runs at a time.

User benefit: No duplicate icons, no conflicting shortcuts - Kynos just works.

Diagnostic logging

What it does: Keeps detailed logs for troubleshooting, without recording sensitive information.

User benefit: If something goes wrong, support can quickly find the issue using the logs.

Limitations: Extended logging is available but requires a manual setting change.

Experience & setup

OLED-friendly screensaver

What it does: Switches the lock screen to a pure-black display with subtle image fades.

User benefit: Reduces screen burn-in and saves power when your PC is locked for a while.

Limitations: Only active while Kynos is in the locked state.

Personalize your lock screen

What it does: Customize the border color, logo, and theme of your lock screen.

User benefit: Make Kynos feel like yours instead of a generic security tool.

Limitations: Custom logos need to be image files on your PC.

Guided setup wizard

What it does: Walks you through license selection, PIN creation, and email alert setup on first launch.

User benefit: Everything important is configured before your first real lock. No guesswork.

Free trial and licensing

What it does: Try the full app free for 14 days, then activate with a one-time license purchase.

User benefit: Evaluate everything before you pay. Once licensed, no subscriptions or renewals.

Limitations: An internet connection is needed for the initial trial or license activation.
